Brache

ui/ux

The german word »Brache« means »fallow«. The website is a collection of student projects which interpret this topic.

In collaboration with Julia Halper I designed and coded the website brache.org to showcase our projects of the »Graphische Meisterschule«.

»Wo nichts ist, ist Platz für alles«—»Void makes space.«

Fallow appears to be removed from creation, function or invention, which is a rare phenomenon in a society seeking to seize every moment and efficiently order every bit of available space. Everything should be usable, measurable and accessible.

In our world and our thinking, is there still idle space, ideational or actual? Nowadays, will such space be able to persist?

The projects are displayed as small squares that might be reminiscent of pixels. The squares’ positions are randomly generated to force the user to drag the screen around, frustratingly withholding any sense of order whatsoever. This navigation makes neither sense nor is it useful or practical in any way. The system reflects the inefficiency and the unused, the unspoken and unthought that is the fallow.
