Die Tiefsee

»Die Tiefsee« is an interactive website showing the vast deep sea and its few inhabitants.
The website die-tiefsee.at was the final project for my diploma from »Graphische Meisterschule«. It displays the astonishing lack of knowledge about the deep sea and aims to convey the feeling of a long, cold, lonely, dark journey to the ground of 11 km depth.
The turquoise and coral colors create an overall contemporary look which is supported by the condensed Politica typeface. In contrast, the copy text in Droid Serif and the stippled illustrations of the animals evoke memories of old scientific books.
I designed and coded an experience in which the user dives from the water surface into a mostly unknown world. Users scroll proportionally to the actual depth and encounter some strange animals along the way. Descending towards the unknown, information about the different zones narrates the journey, as creatures of the deep sea swim past.
